Blog: Street Literature

Vanessa Irvin Morris’s blog is on Blogspot.

DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?

Vanessa Irvin Morris (VIM): Tagline: A Black Librarian Pounds the Pavement to Bring You the Word on Street Lit || This is a blog where I explore the literary genre of Street Literature for educators (teachers and librarians)

DCSME: How did you pick the topic for Street Literature?

VIM: I have been researching Street Literature for over 10 years. I am a librarian educator in higher ed. and before that I was a public librarian for a major city library system, in the hood. I’ve worked extensively with inner-city teens and their reading and research interests/needs. The popularity of Street Lit in public libraries for the past 10 years continues to be a phenomenon that needs to be explored, discussed, and understood.

DCSME: How is Street Literature different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?

VIM: To my knowledge and research, there are no other blogs solely devoted to advocating for the literary genre of Street Literature.

DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?

VIM: I like that I can share my questions and understandings with educators so that they can better serve their students and readers. I also appreciate having a forum where I can critically make connections between what happens in the world as we live, and how that relates to the language and power of the streets.

DCSME: How often do you update Street Literature?

VIM: I update my blog at least 3 times per month.

DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?

VIM: Street Lit a.k.a. “urban fiction” is a literary genre that has been chagrined by many in the literary field and in education. My blog is an advocate for the merits of the genre and its readers. My stance is to not judge the book by its cover and to not judge the reader by his/her book.
