DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?

Ben Langhinrichs (BL): My Comfy Chair is a kid-lit review blog focused on middle grade and younger. There is a special emphasis on books which feature diversity, multiculturalism and acceptance, as well as books from small, independent presses.

DCSME: How did you pick the topic for My Comfy Chair?

BL: I love middle grade and children’s books, and wanted an excuse to read and promote those books and their authors. I also write middle grade fiction, so I like the chance to study and talk about the topic.

DCSME: How is My Comfy Chair different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?

BL: There are many blogs which focus on young adult fiction, but far fewer that cover middle grade fiction or picture books. Since I have connections and an interest in small presses, I also like the opportunity to promote lesser known authors and presses that turn out great work. My audience is mainly parents, teachers and librarians, since middle grade and picture book readers don’t spend much time browsing blogs.

DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?

BL: I like developing a relationship with my readers. When somebody starts following regularly, or commenting, I start to get a feel for that person. Like an actor playing a part for a specific person in the audience, it becomes easier to write and converse with specific people, even while inviting others join the conversation.

DCSME: How often do you update My Comfy Chair?

BL: About once every day or two. I mostly post book reviews or comments about a specific book series, such as the Horrible Histories, and don’t post just to post.

DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?

BL: I love suggestions. The most recent book I reviewed was My Princess Boy, which I had not heard about until it was recommended, and I have had readers recommend many great books. I especially like finding books about acceptance and diversity.
