Blog: A Line A Day
Roy L. Pickering Jr.’s blog is on Blogspot.
DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?
Roy L. Pickering Jr. (RLP): My blog is a continuous work in progress, fluidly charting my diverse interests and reflecting the far reaching range of my tastes. Frequent subjects of discussion include literature, the book publishing industry, sports, politics, pop culture and artistic motivation. You will find thoughtful essays and stream of consciousness rants, reviews of books written by others and the presentation of my own fiction – novel excerpts as well as short stories.
DCSME: How did you pick the topic for A Line A Day?
RLP: Rather than being a traditional blog that focuses on a single subject, my blog is basically an electronic journal. Only rather than discussing my personal life I write opinion pieces on a variety of topics. A number of my postings result from headlining stories of the day that elicit strong reactions in my timeline on Twitter. I start off responding to what I see there, particulary in cases where my own opinion on the matter differs from the mainstream consensus, and sometimes end up with enough material to assemble and present it as a blog posting. I rarely know what I’ll be writing about next because my postings tend to be reactions/responses to what takes place in the world at large, and I have no way of predicting what will trigger my next commentary.
DCSME: How is A Line A Day different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?
RLP: My answer to the previous question basically answers this one. A Line A Day mirrors no other blog because it’s doubtful that anyone else shares my unique set of interests and opinions. Certainly you’ll find political commentary by me on topics addressed on political blogs as well, book reviews that can be found on book review blogs, sports commentary such as appears on many sports blogs, and social commentary on topics of interest to various bloggers. But chances are you will not find this all packaged in the same place other than at A Line A Day. My original fiction also sets it apart from other blogs.
DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?
RLP: I’m a writer with strong opinions on a variety of matters. Blogging allows me to express those opinions in writing in a different manner than enabled by my fiction writing.
DCSME: How often do you update A Line A Day?
RLP: I do not have a set schedule in large part because my postings are often in response to specific events. Those of strongest interest to me do not conveniently occur at regular intervals. So I sometimes go several weeks between postings, and at other times I’ll create postings just one day apart. On average I’d say I write two per month.
DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?
RLP: I love getting feedback from my readers and I’m not necessarily looking for people to echo the opinions I have expressed. If you agree with me let me know, but if you don’t, please don’t hesitate to tell me why so a meaningful exchange of ideas can take place. I don’t simply want to talk at people, but to them, and that requires back and forth communication I’d love to do more of.
