DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?

Cynthia Meyers-Hanson (CH): Currently, I blog about books my students wrote. WHY? We live in one of the hardest hit areas of our country for children in homeless shelters and families on the streets. The proceeds from their writing help replenish local food banks while encouraging others throughout the nation to focus on the growing numbers of children displaced by our economy. Meanwhile, their books empowered those involved to find ways to express their needs as well as promote ideas to help others trapped by the bad economy and poverty.

DCSME: How did you pick the topic for mchanson714?

CH: Over the course of a few years, my students highlighted their needs. I felt as a teacher I needed to empower them by showing them ‘how to fish.’ They enjoyed helping others while catching a glimpse of other avenues out of poverty.

DCSME: How is mchanson714 different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?

CH:It’s more than personal to me; I try to help others along the way. Thus, I incorporated their developing reading skills with creativity. My students’ books empowered them while helping others. My ‘At Risk’ of dropping out of high school classes wrote one book aimed at their community and the second trained pre-school aged children by promoting basic reading skills. The second book mentioned or The GNAW Project is by far my favorite. By the way, GNAW represents the purchase of Granola, Nuts, Applesauce, and Water to feed their hungry peers. Those foods are non-perishable; the teens felt those items best represented the spirit of their project. It makes a cute and catchy acronym as well.

DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?

CH: I come from the ‘school of hard knocks;’ as a child, I had to overcome my own poverty and other issues. I like telling stories- even harsh ones- that turn out to be inspirational or loving. I believe that even the hardest and darkest tales can end with ‘the light at the end of the tunnel.’ I hope after you read some of my blog and books that you feel the same way. Therefore, I invite you to come along for the ride; I hope you’ll share your light while we inspire each other to greater heights.

DCSME: How often do you update mchanson714?

CH: I’m trying to be regular. I’d like to update at least once per week. I run excerpt from books, there. The current title is ‘The Weave’ or the second book that my students compiled. It is essays about weaving comforters or blankets to help ‘comfort the poor’ during the winter freeze as well as rainy weather.

DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?

CH: I have faced many tough days but life is too short to remain in the daze. I hope you’ll enjoy the little things in life. They are free or will set you free of despair- just like I hope that my stories in my blog do for you.
