Blog: Salsa Casino in DC

Jennifer Gonzalez’s blog is on Blogspot.

DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?

Jennifer Gonzalez (JG): I write about the Cuban dance scene in Washington DC. That includes clubs, DJs, events, dancing as well as articles relating to the music, the culture, and how people react to it. I post videos, interviews, photos, and links to classes, events, and parties.

DCSME: How did you pick the topic for Salsa Casino in DC?

JG: I am very active in the Cuban dance scene having danced salsa for 11 years with a 4-year focus in Cuban salsa. I want the community to grow so I decided to write a blog to give exposure to the dance and culture.

DCSME: How is Salsa Casino in DC different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?

JG: At this time, there are no other blogs actively covering the Cuban dance scene in DC. As far as other dance blogs, mine focuses on Cuban salsa, rumba, son, and forms of dance that others may not understand.

DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?

JG: I enjoy blogging because it gives me an outlet to express my thoughts and opinions. It has also given me the opportunity to put DC on the map for Cuban dance. I have integrated interviews into the blog and given exposure to the only female Cuban DJ in the United States. I feel proud of my writing and enjoy the feedback I receive from around the world.

DCSME: How often do you update Salsa Casino in DC?

JG: I try to update my blog on a weekly basis. There are times I am able to write more than one or two times a week.

DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?

JG: Although my blog is dedicated to Cuban dance and music, I feel that we can all learn from each other through what we write. I try to share the background of the dance in hopes that someone who is unfamiliar with the genre can learn something new.

Blog: The Human Rights Blog

Justina M. Uram Mubangu’s blog is self-hosted on WordPress.

DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?

Justina M. Uram Mubangu (JMUM): The Human Rights Blog is dedicated to the discussion and dissemination of human rights and international law-related news and information.

DCSME: How did you pick the topic for The Human Rights Blog?

JMUM: I have a particular interest and passion for protecting and advancing the human rights of all individuals, especially those people who are oppressed or cannot speak for themselves. While the idea of human rights has been on my radar for a long time, my interest and knowledge in the subject really took shape during law school at Penn State after I took a course in International Human Rights Law.

I decided to blog about human rights because I feel as though this is an important topic that is underreported in mainstream American media. I feel as though often times, when human rights issues are reported in the media, strong political undertones usually exist, which unfortunately tend to tarnish or outshine the human rights facets of the story.

DCSME: How is The Human Rights Blog different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?

JMUM: First, I try to provide readers not only with the facts, but also some legal analysis, if applicable to the topic. Human rights is not a concept that was pulled from thin air. It has become well-established throughout the course of history and is, in many cases, clearly defined by internationally recognized legal norms and the treaties and cases which shaped these norms.

Second, If my own personal opinion is included as part of the article, then it is clearly stated as opinion. I feel as though it is very important, when writing about a topic such as human rights, to not muddle or blur the lines between opinion and facts.

Finally, The Human Rights Blog is written and operated only by me; I do not have a team of writers or contributors, though I do welcome suggestions and ideas for future articles.

DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?

JMUM: Blogging gives me the opportunity to write about issues that are important to me and that I hope are important to other people as well. It also allows me to bring such vital information to a wide variety of individuals, many of whom may have never heard of the term ‘human rights’ before stumbling upon my blog. To have the chance to disseminate information that I find relevant or interesting to a potentially large audience is one of the greatest benefits of blogging. I feel as though writing about human rights related issues and posting articles on my blog, a place where so many people across the world could find them, is my small way to influence society and hopefully spread the message that all people, regardless of age, race, gender, or any other status, all share basic, human rights that are God given and cannot be taken away.

DCSME: How often do you update The Human Rights Blog?

JMUM: Typically one to two times per month.

DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?

JMUM: Human rights is relevant to every person on the planet. I hope that readers of my profile who may be unfamiliar with human rights will be inspired to take a look at my blog in order to familiarize themselves with the topic. Likewise, I hope that those people who are well-versed in this very important area will visit The Human Rights Blog to stay up to date on developing human rights stories and issues, and would perhaps be willing to contact me if there is a specific topic that you would like to see covered.
