Blog: The Legible Bits

Rebecca McKinsey’s blog is on WordPress.com.

DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?

Rebecca McKinsey (RM): As a student journalist, I have heard many times the importance of blogging. Although I do like to blog on the topics of journalism and media, I also write about experiences, things I’ve read and things I want to do. I also blog more in-depth about articles and pieces I’ve written elsewhere. As my interest in photography grows, my blog will also include more photos I have taken.

DCSME: How did you pick the topic for The Legible Bits?

RM: Despite warnings from others that I’ll suffer from ink poisoning, if such a thing exists, I always write reminders for myself on my hand. At the end of the day, if there is something I want to blog about, it’s very likely I wrote about it on my hand. No matter what I write about, the topics usually have that in common — although sometimes the challenge is finding something still legibly written at the end of the day. Thus the title of, and the basis for, my blog — The Legible Bits.

DCSME: How is The Legible Bits different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?

RM: I see many student journalists — and seasoned journalists — writing mainly about media-related topics. Although that is one of my main interests and I do like to touch on journalistic subjects in my blog, I also write about things I see, experience and want to change, relying on my journalism background to help me produce insightful and enjoyable pieces. I believe this distinction makes my blog unique.

DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?

RM: As a journalist, I often hear how important it is to stay objective. My blog provides relief from that rigidity — it’s a place where I can share my opinion, interact with others and have fun.

DCSME: How often do you update The Legible Bits?

RM: This blog is still a work in progress, but my goal right now is to update at least once or twice a week, and the frequency may grow in the future.

DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?

RM: I love God, sunflowers and tapirs. I’m planning a trip to Sri Lanka just so I can play with baby elephants. I’m learning to love photography. And I love feedback. I never think my opinion is the only one, and it’s so important to me to respect the beliefs of others. I would hope that the people who read my blog would respect my opinion but also feel free to share theirs.

I have recently started another blog, Hear the Distance Calling, for my upcoming study-abroad trip to Spain; that one will be updated as well in the next few months, and perhaps further into the upcoming years if I continue traveling.

Blog: Pinkheadphones

Ebony Jeanette PR’s blog is on Blogspot.

DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?

Ebony Jeanette PR (EJPR): Pinkheadphones was created to satisfy my craving for the freshest and the best in local music and national acts coming through Columbus, Ohio.

Recently, Pinkheadphones has partnered with Ear Candi Magazine to provide coverage of even more unsigned bands across the nation as well as highlight international and national acts.

We are not genre specific but we are more focused on hard rock and heavy metal music.

DCSME: How did you pick the topic for Pinkheadphones?

EJPR: I am a concert lover, I live for live shows and love writing about new music. Heavy metal is where my heart is so I write about what I like, don’t like, and have questions or opinions about.

DCSME: How is Pinkheadphones different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?

EJPR: My blog is different because it’s 100% my ideas, not a label shoving words down my throat to highlight bands on their roster. My blog includes videos, interviews, and album reviews.

DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?

EJPR: I like creating images with my writing. I want to put the reader in the middle of the pit when I write so they experience the band first hand.

I truly enjoy when a band or artist is very pleased with my review and can see that I took the time to learn about their music, not just write empty sentences with no history or emotion behind them.

DCSME: How often do you update Pinkheadphones?

EJPR: At least once per week.

DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?

EJPR: Thank you for sharing the music in my headphones!
